It began to pour down heavily, a much needed change for the otherwise sultry weather of Chennai. Maybe the rain gods were happy that me and Michela, met for the very first time. Our first date in fact. While we walked slowly towards my car getting drenched in rain, her smile was mercilessly melting me. I couldn’t stop blushing neither could she. I wish I could hug her without a care of the public around us and kiss her tender little lips. Romance was brewing between us for the last two weeks but my work commitments and her exams meant we could not meet until today. As we reached my car, I opened the door for her and she sat in. I slowly drove around without out an intent to drop her at her hostel, I wanted to spend as much time I could with her.
“Did you have a good time?” I said trying to seek some praise.
She was quiet, slowly moved her head and stared through the window. I did catch her smile at the corner of her lips. I knew what that meant as in reply to my question.
Few hours earlier…
"Manish... Where are you? I have been waiting for quite some time," Michela said over the phone.
"Honey, I will be there in 2 minutes. I’m stuck in traffic," I replied her.
Of course I lied. I was confused actually. being at Archies store and having a lot of options in front of me to gift her, I still couldn't zero on what to gift her, nothing could express how much affection I had for her, how much I love her.
I wasn't sure if I should buy a rose for the first date, maybe I wasn't too romantic as a person. Banking upon the store girl's suggestion I finally bought a cute teddy bear. I rushed to the car and drove at furious pace taking on the challenge Chennai’s traffic threw at me. My phone rang again and again, I knew whose name my phone would display. I was late and making a special 'her' wait on a first date is never a good idea. Moreover first date is always terrible for anyone. It’s the nervousness with in that constantly disturbs you more than 'how do I look?' thought.
I parked my car and had to climb four floors to reach the coffee cafe, where she was waiting for me. I simply ran and did pant a lot. She was there, my angel. I looked at her from a distance and I wondered if the teddy bear I bought was as cute as her. After neatly tucking in my shirt, whose actual purpose was to hide my tummy. I started walking towards her and our eyes met.
She smiled at first, we were meeting after such a long time and for the first time it was only me and her. it was meant to be special. All of a sudden realizing how late I was, she started giving me a killing look.
"I know, I’m late. I sorry Michela, my boss held me back, honey."
"Oh honey, why don't you take your boss over a coffee instead," she said while pinching my under developed biceps.
"You mean take him on a date?" I grinned.
"Look we are just meeting and I owe you a treat," She replied. Girls hardly agree that they are on a date, even if it was actually one.
Michela was my classmate in high school yet we hardly spoke. While she was a quiet girl, I hardly gave a damn about girls in person. Our Facebook chats would be clean except for birthday and seasonal greetings. myself being from engineering stream and herself being from architecture stream meant we hardly had things to discuss. It wasn’t until we met during a suddenly planned get together of our school mates. I found her to be a different than she was in school. Generally you would require few aspirins when you speak to a crazy talking girl but I just didn’t want her to stop.
“What do you like to have Mr. Manish?” she asked me.
“Cappuccino and a burger too,” I said. I actually liked to have her little pink lips, which were untainted by lipstick or lip gloss.
I followed her up to the billing counter as it was a self service shop and faked myself as if busily sending some texts on my phone, I was observing her from behind. Obviously, I’m a testosterone filled human.
“34-26-36,” I said while we settled down in the corner table of the cafe, which offered some privacy.
“I’m sorry. What’s that?” Michela replied, acting as if she never understood what I meant.
“Pretty good figure you have” I quipped, unwrapping my burger. She quickly pinched my groin.
“Don’t try to be too smart too soon,” she said with sarcasm. That’s the thing with her, she’s pretty violent. Not that she would beat up anyone, she would effortlessly pinch. Having had too many cousin brothers, she learnt that to pinch was a better option than to hurt a guy by hitting him with her hands.
I quietly sipped my cappuccino and minced the burger, though not in an apologetic manner. She came closer to me, anticipating she might again pinch me mercilessly with her freshly coated long nails, I tried to move away. But thankfully she simply only pulled my cheeks and saying I was a very sweet guy. I definitely felt very good.
As we spoke over various things mostly gossiping, I quietly from my pocket I took out a ‘kinder joy’ chocolate. Yes I was 24 and so was she. Yet she loved eating the chocolate which actually packed for kids and she loved it. She snatched it from my hand and gently ripped it apart and fed me. As a return compliment I too fed her. It was pretty kiddish, yet who was there to judge us over. Affection overloaded.
“Manish, pre final semester results announced today! 3 arrears,” she said in a worried tone.
“That’s bad” I said. Actually which guy would bother about his girlfriend’s result? All he would want is to talk to her not to be concerned about her academics.
“Dad would surely seize my phone and cut off internet access” she said sensing the effects of her bad exam results.
“What? That’s totally illogical,” I panicked, “I too had couple of arrears in college and I certainly cleared it, convince your dad you too would do.”
“You have no idea about my dad”.
Does anyone has an actual reason why parents, easily reason our phone and internet for every bad thing happening in our lives? I loved Michela’s voice, you would too if you could hear it. We would exchange voice notes more than text each other on Whatsapp, I mean I would force her to. Her voice was way sweeter than most I hear on a daily basis. She had a sweet and alluring voice, which I would heard it over again and again and again. Her phone being seized meant end of our long conversations and I definitely hated that. To change the topic, with a prayer on my lips I gave her the teddy bear I bought for her with her name printed over the teddy bear’s heart. I found her in state of ecstasy, as she saw it. A girl is defined mainly with her cute & charming expressions. Sometimes the craziness within her makes to express more with stunning looks when she has gone crazy. She did love soft toys. She hugged me again and this time even tighter.
“Thanks Manish,” she said although she could barely pay attention to me as she was still looking at the teddy.
“My cheek would like to get a return compliment” I grinned.
“Oh really? Take this then,” no she didn’t kiss me but did slap me, although gently.
She then pulled out a neatly packed box from her bag and asked me to open.
“TITAN” the box read as I unwrapped it.
She knew all my tastes, she gifted me a metallic watch. It looked perfect for me as I slipped my wrists through the watch.
“Please wear it daily to office,” she said in her alluring voice. If your crush gifts you a watch it means she wants to be with you all the time, I remembered my friend saying it. I blushed and oh boy she too did.
An hour and half passed and I would hardly believe it. While she would I would hardly listen to her, I would only gaze at her lips and it wasn't like I was cheaply lusting for it, it looked moist and appealing. Maybe the soft drink she was having, helped the case. Every time her lips moved, it only provoked me. Meanwhile I could easily notice her gold chain with a cross hung along with it, it only reminded me how the future stood for me. I knew I could go through it if she holds my hand all along. It makes me wonder if religion is above humans and their feelings.
“Manish I have to leave its 7’o clock already. My warden will screw me, if I’m late” she said.
“What’s in this bag by the way,” I said trying to move her attention.
“That’s the design sheets for tomorrow’s presentation”
“Show me, Michela” I said, grabbing her bag. As I pulled out the sheets, I found some designs but couldn’t understand what it was. She would patiently explain the design of ballerina shaped house and I wanted was to spend as much time as possible with her. As I kept asking her some silly questions, she understood what I was up to.
“You better drop me right now,” she protested.
“So you wanna leave so soon?” I said with a low voice.
“Aww.. darling you know I should leave by now,” she said holding my face.
“Promise me, we will meet soon I will take a day off from office,”
“Arey, I promise you. Stop acting like a child now” she protested. With confidence, I held her hands and walked out of the cafĂ©.
Now…
As the soft romantic music played in the car, I reluctantly drove. I mostly observed her I wasn’t able to think how my life would turn out to be without her by my side. I was being bit emotional maybe the environment made me think way too much ahead. The rain, moist and a girl beside you makes you think so much. I wondered what if all my thoughts doesn’t turn out the way I thought it would. What if our parents oppose our marriage? Well, yes it was our first date. But I guess I already knew who my life partner was. I tried to control myself being emotional.
My bad luck, we almost reached her hostel. She asked me to stop two streets away from her hostel to avoid suspicion. She was to get out of the car but I suddenly held her hand. She looked into to my eyes I bent and kissed her hand. She then moved across the seat so did I, i could see her lips tremble in excitement and nervousness. It took lot of guts from my side too. As we came even closer in the dim light, I could hardly see her. I held her face and advance, with my lips inches away from hers, I dwelled in her aroma.
“BASTARD BOSS CALLING…” my phone rang, it broke the silence and the moment.
She quickly regained herself and got out of the car, bidding me good night she hurried towards her hostel. I could do nothing about. Maybe it was destined to happen this way. It was a happy date for me, feels incredible actually. But all I wish now is to kill my boss.
“Did you have a good time?” I said trying to seek some praise.
She was quiet, slowly moved her head and stared through the window. I did catch her smile at the corner of her lips. I knew what that meant as in reply to my question.
